Some remedies for the chilli burn

So you have eaten too many of our crisps and would like to know how to reduce the burning... Always remember that capsaicin (the substance that make peppers hot) is only slightly soluble in water, therefore water is not very effective at quenching the heat. It is more soluble however in oils and alcohols

There are a number of suggested remedies…

  1. A cup of whole milk rinsed well in mouth. This is one of the quickest and best remedies.

  2. Other dairy products such as milk or yoghurt will help, as the compounds they contain will displace the capsaicin.

  3. Another favourite is bread and butter. The oils in the butter displace the capsaicin, but the bread helps to strip away the heat as you chew.

  4. The most popular is probably beer. Beer works in two ways:

a. The alcohol content in the beer dissolves the capsaicin.

b. Drink enough beer and you won't care how hot your mouth is anyway!

Remember, the more chilli's you eat the greater your tolerance to them increases, so next time it will not be as bad - honest!
